I was in San Diego around the same time doing my hitch in the Navy.  Your story brought back an amusing incident I'd long since forgotten.  It was 1979 and I was doing a month long stint of shore patrol.  My assignment this night was the Enlisted Men's club at the Naval station.  I was paired with a guy I'd never met who spoke with a strong southern drawl.

Everything was going well.  The Filipino band was cranking out a Comodores cover...Three Times a Lady, I think and the dance floor was crowded.  The set ended and the band was to be back in 20 minutes or so.  My partner and I decided to take a walk around the parking lot as part of our patrol.

Upon returning to the club to go back inside my partner spots a couple guys in a car passing a joint.  I can still hear him say in his southern accent...'Looks like we got us some dope smokers'.  He approaches the car and I can't really remember how it all went down but the base police came and carted the two away.  It turns out that one of them was the base player for the band.  I wasn't too excited to bust the guys but I could see that my patrol buddy was all too happy to do it.

The band took to the stage, minus their base player and I'm sure that not many in the crowd actually noticed.  Ah yes, my Navy days.  I'd like to have been at one of those frat parties but that wasn't my crowd.
