Parens Patriae
Kent - I'm pretty sure that marriage has nothing to do with whether or not social services can remove a child from an abusive or otherwise unfit home. I seemed to recall that the State has what's called Parens Patriae over every child under legal age regardless of whether or not the parents or legal guardians are married. The State has a vested interest in protecting it's children - and if you don't believe me try beating your kids and see what happens.
