Was that him (DL) strumming a guitar rather crudely during one of the party scenes? 

I liked his debut recording a lot.   Saw him live at Montreal Jazz Fest 2 years ago,and was very disappointed.  He was attempting to play this loud electric rock, and he really is a very mediocre guitar player,in my opinion.  However...his real strength is Pedal Steel, which was his first instrument,and which he plays beautifully.   I was expecting more of the mellow acoustic music from the first recording...and none of it was there,though.
