As a matter of fact, I just saw it two days ago.  In short, I'd say the strengths were its character study and McDormand's tour de force performance.  However, it failed miserably in trying to force screenwriting 101 plot bits into its leisurely storytelling pace.  I guess they lost their nerve to go the full indie route.  Still recommended.

Incidentally, I harbored a secret desire to see this film to catch a cameo of one of my favorite artists, Daniel Lanois.  I saw him in concert five times over the summer (doubling my collective concert-going total) and never failed to leave breathtaken.  What a beautiful artist.

David, have you ever had any connection with DL?  You two are the only remaining artists to stir my passions.
