sadly, i had to search the www to make sure i knew what's up with state wolf laws. it's a recurring topic of legislation, debate, and angry letters to the editor.

aerial wolf hunting is now legal, signed into law by governor frank murkowski in june. he had stated his opposition to the law in april, but was apparently satisfied that the permit requirements would keep the state firmly in control of any such hunting...

even though the permits are supposed to be issued with the soundest biological science in mind, opponents like Defenders of Wildlife worry about how the law (and the science) might be used...

a narrow majority of voters defeated initiatives to allow such hunting in 1996 and 2000. the angry letters tapered off in july, and i haven't heard much about the issue since then.
