Who can forget Neil Diamond up there doing his thing? I guess Robertson had invited Diamond because he was producing a record for Neil. Legend has it that Robertson at one point actually wanted to dump Muddy Waters from the show so Diamond could perform. Helm was said to have become so outraged at this that Robbie changed his mind. Levon felt The Band owed more of a debt to Muddy and I can't say I'd argue with that. With all the talent that shows up on The Last Waltz Diamond's performance seems a bit out of place and fairly bizarre. I wonder if the coked up Neil Young had any interaction with Mr. Diamond backstage. Must of been priceless. The big question that comes to mind after watching The Last Waltz is why call it quits after that? The members of The Band were all so amazing that night. They looked and sounded like they were playing as if their lives depended on it. As a musician why would you want to walk away from something that sounded and felt that good? From what was said I guess it was mainly Robbie that wanted no more of the road. That old saying does go "Always leave them wanting more." and that they did.
