While I'm unfamiliar with Centralia, I do know Superior, Arizonal. A cursed town, first built on the site of a
mass suicide/massacre of Indians. Masada-like, the tribe chose throwing their children and then themselves off of a two hundred foot cliff, rather than allowing themselves to be taken, in this case by the US Cavalry.
The cliff where this tragedy took place looms over the main street of the town, which exists because of a rich series of veins, not only of coal, but of copper as well, which, like Centralia, caught fire underground. Anaconda Copper closed up shop when the fire began, removing the sole source of work, but a surprising number of people still live there, mostly working in speed labs, which are busted regularly.
Doc can testify as to the truly hellish nature of a town on top of one of these fires. Where the puddles belch heat, and where the air stinks of sulphur, and hideous toxins, and the locals all have hideous skin conditions and the talk in the bar is of tumors and emphysema.
Gaaah! I'll never forget Superior.
