I guess the closest I can come to that was seeing Al Green in concert and being right down in front. Toward the end of the show, Al came down off the stage and walked into the crowd. I was right in front on the aisle, and Al was moving along the row, shaking hands, singing, shouting, like a good old revival. He gets down to me and I stick out my hand as he looks at me, and Al grabs it and yanks me out into the aisle with him and gives me a big sweaty hug. Al can hug, let me tell you.
All of my meetings with politicians have been, well, very subdued. I've never got very excited by them. With Kamala Harris there is an energy larger than anything I have seen or felt before. I mean my parents used to talk to be about John and Robert Kennedy, that the crowds were electrified by them. I think Kamala is the first in my lifetime to produce this kind of energy. She seems to be meeting the moment and is ready for it.
I think a lot of the energy started with relief, just pure unadulterated relief, that there was now a younger, better, stronger candidate in the race. That people just felt Biden and Trump were too old and just were not good candidates.
Watching what has happened, this does seem to be absolutely what needed to happen. People want a president that is presidential, that represents this country, all of it, not just the worst portion of base voters. They want someone that looks and sounds ready to lead, not a person that makes stupid jokes and says horrible things about the country and attempts to divide us.
It now really looks like MAGA will march off the cliff, their candidate is now trying to sell the idea that Kamala is not black, that she made that up. It's both stupid and disgusting. People do not want a person like this to be president.
He's making it easy for Harris. The strategy they had, that they were going to use, which was supposed to be a unity theme, has rapidly been tossed overboard. Donald went right back to division, racism, bigotry, and hate...the things that only appeal to the worst of MAGA. He is a total disgrace, and the Republicans have sold out to him.
He had momentum, from the assassination attempt and from Biden's poor debate. That's all gone, and he has set a course back to the bottom. It is where he is most comfortable, in the muck, and it will be a losing strategy. He chose a horrific guy to be his VP and that is just one more anchor around his neck. Nothing is working so his insane pivot is to try to sell the idea that Kamala is not black, that she is Indian, and the reason for doing so is because he knows his MAGA base hates Vance's wife and children because they are of Indian descent.
Behind closed doors, Trump is saying this attack on Harris is also to punish Vance for having married a brown woman and having brown kids. Donny is one seriously sick individual.
The truth is, Trump is barely running a campaign, and what he is doing making his media appearances about his opponent's race is ugly and stupid. It is causing revulsion among the people watching it. It is why the intent is not to win through votes, but to file legal challenges and try to get loyalists in several states to refuse to certify vote counts if he does not win.
I've never seen something like this in American politics. Honestly, I personally don't feel much of anything anymore about politics, but Kamala has been a ray of light in this time.
