Icon One of my best Xmas gifts ever.....

One of the best gifts I ever received was a current baseball card of Pete Rose back in 1982 from my mother - and I was never really a huge Rose fan. Back then, I was a huge fan of baseball player Steve Garvey.

One time, while riding the school bus, with me as Jr or Sr, we had a substitute bus driver (I still remember his name) who had never driven our bus before.  I did something to misbehave and he demanded I move to the seat behind him from where I sat in the back of the bus.  I refused.  At one point the bus driver asked me my name and for an instant, I was going to say Steve Garvey, but I thought he wouldn't get the joke, so instead I told him, "Pete Rose."

He then started addressing me as "Mr. Rose" and said how he would be referring me to the school truant officer who dealt with bus issues.  The poor guy actually believed my name was "Pete Rose."

Of course, as soon as I got off the bus, some other student told the bus driver how my name really wasn't "Pete Rose" and the next day after a visit from the school truant officer, I was kicked off the bus for I think seven days (in total, in my school bus riding career, I set the record for being kicked off the school bus at a clip of a total of 21 days).

As time went on, I later learned that after this happened, when the other bus drivers were back at the bus barn and whenever this substitute driver would work he was constantly asked if he had encountered "Pete Rose" or any other celebrity and if he did, did he get an autograph.

So, as a gag gift, my mother gave me a baseball card of Pete Rose and I still have it.

My mother loved giving gag gifts.
