Well, in times like these, when I want a break from what is happening in the world, I will sometimes go to the films that always hit me in a beautiful way. I like a lot of different kinds of pictures but some I just don't recommend to most people. I mean, while we are watching these current wars, although I think it may be timely to watch Come and See, as a comment on what war does to people, it is a brutal film. Brutal, but truly brilliant. I think that everybody should see it but be in the right mindset when you do. It's not a film you are going to feel good at the end of it. You may feel like there should never be another war waged again...which is the point. Plus, the central character is boy, who by the end of the short period of time the film covers, ages into what looks like a little old man. War devastates the kid and pretty much everybody in the film.
Anyway, that's not a go to "feel good" film for me so I am not saying go to that right now.
The two I was going to recommend here, if you have not already seen them, are Hal Ashby's Being There and Bill Forsyth's Local Hero. Beautiful, humanist pictures about people and the world. Definitely seek those out if you have never seen them. They are not going to bury you in the darkness of the world and will whisper things to you about the light. We need a balance and we need to be able to imagine the goodness in people to keep us somewhat sane. These are also philosophical, intelligent films, so they engage your heart and mind.
