One of my complaints about liberals on a national stage has been how too many of them carry an aroma of not only thinking he or she is the smartest person in the room, but that he or she also thinks he or she knows best for everyone else and how these politicians can't be told anything.
On top of that, the political hubris of Democrats usually ends badly - very badly. Look at the latest debacle in Virginia. And look at Hillary Clinton's campaign (one would think a person with even a tiny bit of common sense after seeing how Republicans turned tiny idiotic things in her husband's administration into mountains of fake scandals that the person would take one look at a private server and declare, "Oh, FUCK no!" But what did she do? Completely ignored the past and plowed straight ahead thinking just because Colin Powell did it, she would be okay, too. ).
To me, Democratic hubris is the epitome of how liberals are viewed by everyday people.
Next, unfortunately for National Democrats, our party lacks one thing that makes messaging much, much easier and that is we are truly a melting pot party while the Republicans are more cohesive in their sameness. With that, to me, National Democrats too often focus on the immediately out in the open flashpoints erupting in the country - in other words, too much sticking the wet thumb up in the wind to see which way the wind is blowing. Take the disastrous repercussions of the "defund the police" stance (now, while I agree there are serious reforms that need to be made in policing - serious ones indeed - there are more effective and reasonable ways to deal with these issues than running into a political shitstorm without the proper political equipment).
Peter T., in referring to a "Bubba" you inadvertently make my point for me (and I believe your sincerity when it comes to these folks and believe you just used "Bubba" to make an illustration).
As I typed earlier, the poor country folks in a poor county have more in common with a poor person in a big city than their differences but the way these folks are set off against each other one would never think that.
And when I suggest "sincere" policies are needed, I mean "sincere" and none of this take the cash from the big donors and act like you are doing something, but really do something that benefits PEOPLE.
Here is Soft White Underbelly's 21-minute interview with Rice. If Democrats can learn to speak to people like this (and I think a viewing of this man will be a window into how to do that), then I think their path would be much clearer, but no, they won't try to and that is because the typical National Democrat's reply would consist of him or her declaring how he or she is an expert in talking to people and by God, no one should be telling them how to do so.
