it might indeed be the religious nutters and political call but there sure are lots of them around and they can and do shape policy. being an EU citizen is a great source of pride to you and me but i am not sure it will hold unless Germany becomes more militarily aligned with France (The UK and US most recently absented themselves from this policing role due to Trump and Johnson and don't deserve to be considered benign anymore). There are big problems ahead with China and unless the liberal democracies of Canada and Australia and New Zealand and France and Germany (And some Nordic countries) 'front up' to them at some point there could be a whole shake up of power, albeit i think most of it will happen in space.
