I went there and read through that and listened to the first video. They seem to be referring to a training course (I've heard Julia doing them as well and always find them nutty) that deals with racism and gender issues in the classroom. I did not really get that there was a free speech issue here, the supposed instructors are, typically, a bit nutty. Often taking these training classes is mandatory for teachers/instructors. Also it is pretty common to hear teachers/instructors commenting on how wacky they are.

Are they "indoctrinating" students there? Probably not but that is now common that you can't really delve deeply into race or gender issues in a classroom because it creates what is seen as an uncomfortable environment for various students.

Also like I said, these days you will end up in a sea of lawsuits if you do something that is offensive or upsetting to an individual or group. A very good friend of mine is embroiled in one of these situations right now because a 10 year old Asian girl wrote an essay on Hitler when asked to write about a historical figure. The teacher that gave the assignment posted all of the student essays on a wall in the school, as is always done with the kids writing. Of course some Jewish families came in, saw her essay (another kid wrote about Mussolini) and got offended. They shared their offense with the Jewish community and it became a national news story. Needless to say, the teacher and principal of the school have now been put on leave and are likely to be fired.

Why? To avoid further exposure on the news and lawsuits. The teacher and the principal did not write the essay. They did not tell the girl to write about Hitler. She chose that topic because in her eyes Asian Americans today she felt were being treated with the same type of hate and scorn that Jews in the time of Hitler faced. However, the teacher hung it on the wall and apparently the principal did not tell her to take it down...so, probably losing their jobs.

Is that right? Certainly not.

Julia sort of went through something similar once. When she taught at the elementary level she and her fellow language teacher had the kids write plays in the target language every year. One year the kids wrote a play that involved kids having to wear dunce caps. The teachers did not write these plays, the kids composed them themselves. Here was the catch, in Spanish the word for dunce is tonto. So, in the play the kids were wearing hats that said "tonto" on them. At the end of the night of children's foreign language plays (impressive I thought to have elementary school students writing plays in French and Spanish) an outraged parent approached my wife. She laid into her about how offensive it was to have her two boys wearing hats that said "tonto" on them.

Why?

Well, because her boys were 1/25 Native American and she took her Native American heritage very seriously and to have her Native American kids wearing "tonto" hats was a total disgrace. Julia politely asked why she approached her about the tonto hats. The woman screamed "Because you are the Spanish teacher and should never have allowed this!"

Julia said "Well, your boys wrote that play and so maybe you should discuss with them why they wrote it and the meaning it had for you to see them in those hats. Also I am not the Spanish teacher. My colleague is the Spanish teacher. I am the French teacher. I'm sure she will be happy to discuss it with you."

Then Julia asked "What made you think I was the Spanish teacher?"

The woman then looked embarrassed. Julia asked "Is it because I am brown and look more like a Spanish teacher?"

This threw the woman off completely and so her outrage fizzled. She had automatically thought the brown woman taught Spanish and the white woman taught French. Is that racist? Probably to someone that just had a fit about her sons wearing tonto hats.

What's my point?

Well, first I could never be a teacher. Second, perspective is everything. Third, I have no idea what kind of environment educators in Oklahoma have to endure but my guess is that is not a particularly tolerant state. Sure, the woman speaking in that video is ham fisted as all hell with the subject matter but I don't think there is some giant free speech violation taking place.

On the two subjects sort of mentioned, race and gender, I agree that there is a tendency to go overboard to make sure these subjects are dealt with in a specific way.
