Cleese was always the cynic of the Python bunch, and such inclination only gets worse with age - doesn't help that his now 4 marriages and 3 divorces has all cost him a bundle... Ad to that, that they all had to defend their brand of humor against thoroughly humorless British scholars of varying intelligence especially in regards to Life of Brian, and one can see why they ended up a bit serious and cynic in their old age ;-)
