Captives of Bad Ideas
Those were undoubtedly good people entranced in the pews, heathcliffe, but they were captured by some pretty awful ideas. For the few freethinkers in the church, the social pressure to conform would have made dissent extremely unlikely. I think Sam Harris said that religion allows people to believe by the millions what only lunatics or idiots could believe on their own.
