This brilliant article by George Packer really examines life under Trump for long-serving, deeply patriotic, government employees. Trump's followers will never read anything in The Atlantic, or most anywhere else. The majority of them are sitting back and enjoying the pro-wrestling cartoonish and buffoonish spectacle, not appreciating the real dangers to our unity, character, future, and the institutions that have served us pretty damn well for a hell of a long time. The cruel, life-shattering onslaught that these people face from Trump and his servile appointees is beyond shocking. And if ambassadors, FBI directors, and military leaders are treated so abysmally now, what horrors await the United States and the world if Trump wins in November? In a second term, there will be virtually no constraints placed upon this deranged, mentally ill bastard. The current HBO mini-series, The Plot Against America, screams out that truly terrifying events can occur here. The erosion of liberties and norms of behavior starts small, and incrementally, we lose a bit here and accept something unsavory there, and pretty soon, you realize something precious can't be regained. Perhaps yesterday's results in Wisconsin are an inflection point. Perhaps sane America is asserting itself. But it's a long way to November and the Trump and the sons of bitches at Fox News sure know how to craft narratives by inflaming and outraging the credulous. With three Trump flags flying just a street away, I need a damn Biden lawn sign, now. And I sure as hell hope he's keeping an "Enemies List" that I appear on. And shame on our three amigos for not returning and publicly disavowing the bastard-in-chief! Now I feel better!
