Don't Throw Away The "Rice" Just Yet!
As I read your follow-up, I too was thinking that your son's experience would make for a heck of a college admissions essay! Don't throw away the "Rice" just yet. Yes, Rice is ridiculously selective and it demands something approaching stratospheric ACTs, but I know an admissions person at a top 10 liberal arts college who says that the compelling, truly unique, personal essay can compensate for weaknesses in other areas.
