First, let me be clear - this is NOT a defense of wearing a KKK outfit or blackface, but a political observation of how things are responded to by political parties and followers in a political party.

First, let's look at the more current reactions to the medical school yearbook of Democratic Virginia Gov Northam and him admitting to dressing in blackface and having a photograph of a person in a KKK outfit and a person in blackface. This behavior back in 1984 was purportedly done out of humor.

Across the Democratic board, Democrats have demanded he step down. Even Republicans have joined this chorus.

Now, let's throw in Iowa Rep S. King and his ties and comments about white supremacy. I have yet to find ANY Republican that has demand he step down. On top of that, his comments regarding people of color clearly have NOT been based in shitty or idiotic humor, but based in his personal beliefs.

Kind of interesting, eh?
