lodging advice for LA

I'm heading down to LA this weekend to look at colleges with my son (still
can't figure out where the years went) Anybody (DB?) have any suggestions for a
funky, cool place to stay . . . there are any number of cookie cutter motels to
choose from, but I'd like to stay somewhere a little offbeat if possible . . .
yes I know it's last minute . . . i tend to be a procrastinator . . . thanks .
. . oh and I'm trying to stay around a $100 a night . . .
