Yup . . . maybe I shouldn't have started a new paragraph there! Again, the chief criticisms of the book have come from conservatives, and I was giving my summary of what their "beef" is. I didn't claim to support their perspective. I'm not sure there was any way to properly relate Tillman's story without some comment about the war (not just the facts of it but the conjecture, the politics, the rationale that might have helped lead to poor decisions by the military brass). To not discuss that and have the book as a straight-up biography wouldn't have put his death in context.
