I took Elvis' point about Stevie Wonder to be about his songwriting and music-making ability and not his vocal style per se.

To make another feeble attempt to make my point, and hopefully a bit less snobbishly--My distaste for American Idol and other shows of its type is that it is truly a popularity contest, with no aspirations to challenge either the contestants or viewers to a higher level of musicianship or participation. Most of these contestants, I'm given to understand, strive to be "The Next {insert popular artist here}", as opposed to having something new or different that they want to bring artistically. These are people who want to be celebrities, not artists. The judges themselves also seem more intent on maintaining their own celebrity rather than pushing the wannabe's to something more than what's already come before.

I guess what I'm really thinking is that there's already so much crap in our pop culture, do we really need a show pushing more of it down our throats? Do we really need an entire generation to be wholly uninquisitive when it comes to the performing arts?
