Not sure what's so gimmicky about it. Portable listening evolved from AM to FM to cassette to CD. Now it's digital. I really love being able to carry 2/3 of my entire music library in my shirt pocket wherever I go.Granted, the MP3 format has some significant shortcomings, but when I can fit about 60 solid days worth of music on a 160gb iPod, I'll concede to somewhat inferior sound quality. I rip at 320bps, so the dropoff in quality is a bit less than those folks that store at 256 or less. Lossless would be much nicer, but there isn't a good portable device that's readily available (and cheap enough) to support it.Nothing beats listening to vinyl through headphones on a good system, but it's tough to get the whole rig through airport security.
