Icon Thinking for myself...

I'm curious where you stand on other traditionally conservative Christian political positions: prayer in public schools, gay rights, the teaching of creationism in public schools, to name but a few.

Peter,

I believe in prayer and do so daily.  I don't see that anyone needs the state's permission to send out a prayer in school.  I've always felt it should be a private matter which doesn't need an endorsement.  As long as nobody is being told that they can't pray privately in a spare moment I don't see what all the fuss is about.

I struggle with the issue of gay rights.  What exactly does that mean?  I don't think gays should be discriminated against for being who they are.  I struggle with the issue when it comes to gay marriages.  There's a part of me which sees two people who love one another and are in a committed relationship but yet they aren't able to benefit through marriage as a heterosexual couple can.  I've got several gay friends and one couple in particular has been together for 19 years.  I also struggle with what the Old Testament says when it calls homosexuality a detestable sin.

In Minnesota there are several companies which allow for benefits for same sex unions.  I have no problem with that at all.  I would be opposed to the state telling me that I must provide that coverage.

I believe in the separation of church and state.  The waters can get murky in a hurry so you have to be careful what you wish for.  To teach that evolution is the be all end all of our existence would also be wrong in my opinion.  I think creationism deserves a cursory mention without getting too involved.  If they want to teach that mutations occur and evolution happens so long as it taught as theory I would not be opposed.
