Or how much will they be taxed on their imported liquor?

It's a grand thought, but sovereignity opens a whole new kettle of fish, and my facetious remark above is part of the whole thing. If the US government really doesn't want aboriginal nations to be truly sovereign, all it will take is about a 90 day economic standoff and that's the end of the story. For the most part (from what I understand anyway) most of the lands currently held by the tribes are low in resources, which is why the tribes got put there in the first place. Other than a tourist economy through gambling, those sovereign Indian nations would have nothing with which to trade.

It pains me to say it, but history is full of conquered peoples and invaded nations. And history is sorely lacking in experiments where the conquered were given back their freedom. Please don't get me wrong, I think it's a travesty the way the original American peoples (North and South) were slaughtered, diseased, dislocated, relocated, dismissed, and forgotten in the name of Gold and God. It's far too late for them to be "re-introduced" to their natural environment, like the gray wolf, and they will be greeted with even greater distrust and animosity than the wolves have been. It sickens me, it embarrasses me, but I don't see a positive way forward for the current independence movements for the tribal peoples. There will have to be another way, but I don't have any suggestions there.
