A few ideas that easy on the pocketbook:
If you have a good public radio station, check out their classical schedules. A good way to learn what you really like. I really like chamber music and baroque period. A great show, which we have already missed today, most likely, Sunday Morning Barouque. St. Paul Sunday is sometimes nice too. Like Mick, I have found that I really like that medevil period too.
If your cable ( if you have cable) carries Music Choice, check out the Classical, Jazz and especially, Soundscapes channels.
Hearts of Space on Public radio ( tonight, in fact ) If you register at their website, you can listen to the current weekend program anytime during that weekend.
I'm going to invoke a term that strikes disgust in the mind of most red blooded rockers, New Age. Check out some samplers from labels like Windham Hill ( home of the late Michael Hedges) and Narada. Some of it may work for you, some, may not. Some New Age features what you might consider the "progressive rock" versions of a classical piece where they explore a theme in a wandering fashion that can bring new life to the familiar.
Edgar Meyer - Edgar Meyer This will be considered classical 100 years from now.
The Telarc label carries many great classical and jazz performences.
That's some good starter points, anyway...
