Hey Don Pedro & others: Thanks for the response.

Maybe some day I'll have reason to go for the dual-boot, but honestly, from this vantage I can't see why I would ever want to fool with Vista at all.

I need to be able to work online, which XP handles fine (and my IT personnel insist they won't switch to Vista until the last possible moment).

I like to play Civilization III and Sid Meiers' Pirates, when I get the chance, which XP handles fine, but Vista does not. (I know--you're supposed to run them in XP-compatible mode, and I do . . . but the simple fact is, Vista freezes up unpredictably when running programs, no matter what I do, so it isn't much fun to play a game.)

(I see that Civilization IV is allegedly Vista-ready, but I tried that game a few months ago and did not like it at all.)

I would like to be able to run my Tascam USB-144, and Tascam has released updated drivers for Vista . . . but so far, no luck at all on my end.

I need to be able to run the wireless network in my home, which Vista won't do. It won't run the driver for the router so I can use this machine as a hub; it won't run the driver for the wireless connection so I can use this machine to contact the network, now necessarily run from the XP computer in my kid's room. This router and wireless connection, by the way were both bought last week, with "Vista-ready" on the packaging. Linksys lies! Nothing and no one is Vista-Ready!!!!!!

Right now I am using a D-Link wireless connection. It works intermittently. I have to unplug it about every five minutes & plug it back in because Vista doesn't think it works. I think I may be wearing out the contact points in that USB port by doing this all the time.

As I type, I see that the little red X is back in my Network icon, indicating that before I can post this, I'll have to unplug & replug again.

I'll also note that in the time it took to type this message, I have already had to undergo another hard boot, as the machine froze up while I was typing. I got out pen & paper to take down what I had written, knowing that it likely will do it again.

I have heard people, mainly salesmen, talk about Vista having some features that are highly desirable. I sure don't see them from here. Certainly this "won't run software that has been installed on another machine" feature is beyond redeeming.

And it is not a fast system . . . not at all. I am not used to having to wait so long for a computer to boot up--or indeed to REboot, as I am now forced to do several times per day.

So . . . I extend thanks for your kind suggestion, but as soon as I can, I'm kicking Vista out of my life.
