I honestly think that Gore not carrying Tennessee had more to do with demographics and the peak of the Republican revolution. Were Bush allowed to run for a third term, I'm not sure he would even carry Texas this time and certainly not Tennessee.
My only qualm about Gore's association with the anti-Global Warming crowd is their tendency to hysterically squash reasoned arguements on the reality of implementing some regulations. But even this is not helped by things such as Exxon-Mobil's funding of widely discredited research. And around and around we go . . .
