The Internet started as DARPANET, for Defense Advanced Projects Agency Network, which was a military version of the internet. They later changed it to ARPANET. Gore was the loudest and most convincing of the voices that called for ARPANET to be converted and made available to Joe and Josephine Schmo, otherwise known as you and me. He saw early on the potential power of the Internet to become the modern equivalent of the Gutenberg press, a powerful tool for the spreading of ideas and hopefully, genuine democracy.
