Maybe I need to go back an re-read my History Book, but I do remember spiraling inflation and high interest rates when he took office.

I recall major tax cuts, a reduction in interest rates --which helped my middle class family -  his overhaul of the tax code exempted millions with low income.

He did increase defense spending (which drove the deficit to record levels). Due to his strategic escalation of the Cold War, the Soviet Empire collapsed and he was the hero of Eastern Europe.

I also remember a 49 state landslide election in 1984.
