There are a few who do OK: Costa Rica, Chile (post-Pinochet), and Brasil come to mind. For some reason, the ex-Spanish colonies do seem to have trouble with power-sharing arrangements. Is it the Spanish colonial influence or perhaps the autocratic Catholic culture?
For the record, there are a lot o wonderful things about South America, too. It's not all gloom and doom.
