I picked up the CD yesterday, as my wife & daughter both like Mayer. It's well crafted, well played, and in my opinion, completely disposable. The songs sound the same as what he's done before, with the exception of a cover of "Bold as Love", which to me seems like an attempt to garner some cred by covering Hendrix.
I've always admired Mayer as a guitar player. I've seen him play (both live and via video) with Clapton, BB King, Sheryl Crow, the Stones, and a few others, and he can tear it up. His early live shows in the Atlanta area are semi-legendary, particularly when he was doing a more blues-veined repertoire. His problem is as a songwriter. Most of his songs don't carry much musical weight, and his recent attempts to carry lyrical weight come off as pretentious to me. Overall, his songs don't seem to progress much beyond the post-boy band pap which consumes Top40 radio these days.
