Well, they had me worried, but they finally did it. This year's winner of the Stanley Cup, ladies and gentlemen, the Carolina Hurricanes. Congrats to the lads, they finally closed the door on Edmonton.
They have a special place in my heart, even when they were the Hartford Whalers of old. I was living in Winston-Salem (a disastrous year for me personally....very dark period), in 1997 when they had their first official season as the Carolina Hurricanes, playing in the Greensboro Coliseum, before they had the Arena built for them in Raleigh. The southerners really had no clue about hockey, and hardly filled the place, unless New York was the opponent, and then the assholes cheared for New York and Gretsky! Go figure. The upside of their ignorance was that good tickets were always available the night of the game (try that in Montreal some time....just about impossible..most games are sold out for the season).
Well, I'm delighted. I've still got my Hurricanes banner (found it as I was packing..), so I'll have to let 'er fly from my porch this evening.
GO CANES!
