I had a similar problem not so long ago, and was wary of attempting to D/L something from the 'net while the machine was acting possessed.  I went to a Barnes and Noble store and bought a computer magazine that had a disc full of free trial software.  Maybe the whole thing was a scam designed to sell me that magazine, but the stuff on that disc did the trick.
