Wow, that's eerie, was just tellng my son about that team and we
were discussing players including Boom Boom. A great player, and
prince of a guy. He was the second player in NHL history to score
50 goals in one season (60-61),after Maurice "Rocket" Richard.
I remember it like it was yesterday. Gawd what a
dynasty. I even got to the Montreal Forum to see 'em play during
the Stanley Cup at times, and I can still remember one of their
Stanley Cup victory parades downtown, where we got to shake their
hands as they rode through in convertibles with the tops down.
Boom Boom, Jean Belliveau, Henri Richard, JC Tremblay....
They have more professional championships than any other team
in any other sport.
Go HABS!
I can still hear it...."Rouge de Canadiens comptez par numero
cinque...Boom Boom Geoffrion!!", and the deafening roar of the
crowd which followed....P.S. I just read that he discovered or was one of the originators of
the slapshot, and used it extensively in his play.
He was dubbed Boom Boom by sportswriter Charlie Boire of the
Montreal Star while he was playing junior hockey for the Laval
Nationale in the late 1940s.One boom was for the sound of his stick striking the puck; the
second was for when his rocketing shot hit the boards.
