The Shins are "indie" and/or "indie-pop", "indie-rock" (but not "indie prog"), depending on your flavour of the week. "Indie" is/was a term given to a artist(s) who is below the mainstream radar and/or on a indipendent record label.. You don't need to press your own CD to be "indie", Having a reord deal with Sub-Pop is considered "indie". The Shins are the very essence of what "indie" is, and in many ways have influenced a butt load of other rising "indie" acts as well as defining what is now being considered the new "sub-pop sound" the label has focused it's future direction /roster in.
