Icon Nixon's brilliant move...

Getting rid of the draft has turned out to be a tremendous masterstroke by the US government and I don't mean in a good way.

Who is to stand up and fight for the majority of military members who join up out of economic hardship? When I was in the service, of all the people I asked why they signed up, I cannot recall one person's number one reply being that of "patriotism". I'm not saying these young people are not patriotic, but when asked why they joined, the number one reason was "I needed a job" and number two was, "college money".

In my opinion, some sort of service should almost be mandatory and my main reason for this is that if the children of the influential were truly at risk then different and better decisions would be made prior to war.

And as a country, we should all share the burden and not just those who "volunteer" and their families.

As I've asked before - I wish someone somewhere could show me where G W Bush has EVER in his life sacrificed ANYTHING for this country.
