Your points are well taken, David..but I don't think his comments were supposed to be humorous. On the other hand, I don't think again, that they were intentionally rascist. Let's be realistic, if you get into the minds of the entire cabinet and senate..there are plenty of people,black and white, who are, in fact rascist or biased. I don't think that makes them unqualified to govern, unless it is clear that they are using these ideologies as a major basis for action. I am not saying these comments should be given a "pass" either ; if anything this has raised a huge issue by the press and politicians, but with politicians, in particular, I don't think the motivations are ever pure or well-intended, so asking Trent Lott to "step down" may be opportunistic, for some, in either party.
