Well, I finally got to see Paul Kelly and The Stormwater Boys on Friday night, and they were terrific! The Stormwater Boys comprised 4 superb musicians - banjo, double bass, mandolin and fiddle. The banjo and violin players had a friendly rivalry all night which culminated in a song entitled "Birmingham Fling" where they tried to outdo each other - fantastic!
Paul Kelly was in fine voice and appeared very relaxed and happy - I've never seen him smile so much and he even did a spot of dancing at times :)
Most of the songs were taken from his new CD "Foggy Highway". I'd bought a copy only a week back, and listened a couple of times. The concert bought a whole new perspective and appreciation of the music. He played a few older songs, including "To Her Door" and it's suggested sequel "How to Make Gravy" (my favourite). As usual, the tears rolled down my cheeks lstening to that one - bliss!
The main support act was a country singer named Sara Storer. I'm not a big fan of the country genre, but this girl was a genuine delight - lovely personality and a beautiful voice. Her accent would have driven Mick mad though... :) She joined PK on stage to sing a duet called "Hell of a Party" (which will be on her new CD) - they sang and waltzed together!
There were 3 other support acts -all local and all very good. We had 5 hours of music and it was all most enjoyable.
If you get the opportunity to see PK and his merry men - GO!! They are a truly fine group of musicians with an incredible rapport between them, both musically and personally, and the joy that they radiate is infectious!
