"The real question is why he leaked information and why he didn't just take the information to the grand jury. "
As I understand it he was unhappy with the way the investigation was being handled and how the White House was attempting to maneuver the FBI. I think it came down to a simple case of understanding that what was taking place needed to be put before the American public as soon as possible. He also did not leak information, he confirmed items that Woodward presented him and attempted to steer him in the right direction. I really think the thing is that you can't put something like this just in the laps of fellow bureaucrats because then there is the possibility of deal making and back scratching. When you have government corruption at this level it needs to be put before the people and that is the role and responsibility of the media. The people are the highest court and even the president answers to and works for them. It was the right desicion to put it all in front of the American public. You can't let the wolves mind the henhouse.
"The larger question is: what else does he know? Might this explain any paranoia and just exactly how far the Nixon Administration might have gone to protect itself?"
Well, he is 91 and not in the best of body and mind at this stage. Also, I just don't think he ever wanted to be a guy that was giving away all the secrets. So, I would not think we'd ever get much more out of him anyway. History just put him in a certain place at a certain time and he acted. Now his actions will be judged and judged again...and spun and used...etc...
Nixon was sunk by a third rate B&E but it was the tip of the iceberg in a very flawed methodology. In the present context it makes you wonder...this Bush administration appears on the surface far dirtier than the Nixon administration and is using the same flawed methodology and some of the same players...
Oh well, I can be easily dismissed because I live in Massachusetts.
