oh i dunno...how about, it seemed like a good idea at the time? that's always a popular one amongst some people. even if they won't come right out and say it, that's basically the thought behind the apologism (not sure if that's a word but i do know it's not a half-bad set-up for a risque punchline. take it away, Micko...)
