I would say, as you quoted your grandfather, it's his opinion. He feels pretty strongly on that though. Obviously his CO would not walk around saying such things. I trust his opinion though as someone who has been there twice and seen what is happening first hand. He's certainly angry that it's about the oil.

This may tell you a little more about what's happening there. He will be done with his time in the Marines in 4 months. Once he's out he is returning to Iraq as a civilian to work as a firefighter there. The offer is $100,000 a year tax free. He may stay up to three years doing this. He says there is a lot of money being made on this war and the soldiers fighting it are not getting it. Having joined right after 9/11 and risked his life for his country, he almost was killed twice and has lost 50% of his hearing in one ear (he thinks he will likely go completely deaf in that ear), he feels he should take the opportunity to return and actually earn something there. I told him I thought that was earning it the hard way but he does not agree. He also said the mistakes the military is making there, particularly the Army (there's a bit of competition between service branches) just keep getting worse and more frequent and they are in a bad position due to the rules that are now in place.
