Can Michael Jackson be considered a musician?

Actually, I chose MJ because he was the topic of a conversation I was having with a friend. He contends that MJ is NOT a musician because he couldn't sit down and play his music in fornt of an audience. He would need a backing band or a tape playing his music. My friend says that MJ might come up with basic melodies but someone else is writing the music and therefore, MJ, isn't a musician. I disagree. I think coming up with a melody, regardless if you can actually play in on an instrument, can still make you a musician. Thoughts?
