IFC is playing the documentary You See Me Laughin this month. It's about backwoods bluesmen from Mississipi.

I suggest people watch it. It's also on DVD.

One man, Cedell Davis, was struck with polio and another child hood disease, and lost most use of his hands, but still taught himself to play a guitar with a butter knife and innovation. Then the poor guy was trampled one time after a brawl broke out at the juke joint he was playing in. Amazing man.

What I really liked about it was the bluesmen interviewed have lived rich, full lives and are very interesting to listen to. Also, these men have bodies that show wear and tear and their age, unlike today where almost every musical performer must be appealing to look at with perfect bodies, hair and teeth.

It makes me wonder what would have happened in Janice Joplin had of been born in 1970 and her success depended upon music videos instead of her talent.
