Clapton is boring if you listen only to his reincarnation as Eric Clapton post- Cream.  Then, I would agree...so boring and tasteless it's pitiful.  But.... 

Ever heard Sweet Wine on the 1st Cream recording, Fresh Cream?   That is one of the greatest electric guitar solos I have ever heard.  He makes that thing scream and wail so powerfully, it's astounding.   Probably the only electric guitar solo one needs to hear in this lifetime.   I think he's still got it in him, but he schlocked out, for reasons that are entirely unclear to me.   In my books, and based upon his work with Cream, John Mayall and Yardbirds, one of the greats.
