I read what David wrote and I read your response Kevin. It's obvious that there's a huge gap between the two points of view. I'm not answering for David here, he doesn't need me to, but I do have to ask you some questions here Kevin.
First, what do you think about Ronald Reagan? I mean do you think he was a good guy and great president? The thing is he and Rummy (remember that photo of Rummy shakin' Saddam's hand) and all these clowns Wolfie and Feith...well you know who they are...they all knew back when Reagan was CIC that Saddam was a thug and had rape rooms and ruled with an iron fist. They liked him then! Even with his rape rooms and torturing and murdering his own people. Bush 1 let that go on as well and knew all about it. Did nothing when he supposedly gassed his own people...hhmmm...what do you make of that? Course he did attack him when he went on his rampage into Kuwait...told the Iraqis to rise up against Saddam that the "Americans were coming"...then after saying that we walked away and let Saddam slaughter some more folks we had encouraged to "rise up"...we didn't care much about that though did we? Plus the rumor is we sort of encouraged that whole Kuwait rampage.
So really, what do you think of Reagan and Bush 1? They knew about Saddam and did nothing.
Now let me clue you in here...right now we're pals with Uzbekistan. As a matter of fact did you read that little letter I posted here from Kenny Lay to our boy George when he was the gun slinging Govna' of Texas asking him to glad handle the Uzbek ambassador because there was a big ol' deal brewin' for Kenny and Enron with Uzbekistan? Well, guess what! The Uzbek government is known to...ahh...be a little nasty with the way they treat the folks who live in their country...dare I say they might have rape rooms and torture people...all in the name of tracking down and killing terrorists though I'm sure.
I understand your distaste with what David wrote but I really just have to ask do you really believe this whole attack on Iraq and Saddam is a mission of mercy to free the Iraqi people? Do you believe these guys Bush, Rummy, Wolfie, Feith, Perle...any of them...did this because they were concerned with the way Saddam was treating his people?
Personally, I think that freeing the Iraqi people was just a little bonus and not even on their list of reasons why they went there. Sure, now after they could find no WMD's, have admitted to acting on bad intelligence, and not having any way to tie Saddam to 9/11...now all they want to talk about is "Freedom for the Iraqi people"...that was not the tone leading up to this debacle though. Even you said here at one point Kevin, that you felt Bushco was not being honest about what they were doing and it may in fact be about oil.
We all think it's great that Saddam is gone. We all see that as part of the "good" of our going to Iraq. Nobody questions that aspect. It's that we all have a lot of doubts about why we're there and if, given our set of circumstances after 9/11, it was a wise choice to dedicate most of our resources to a war in Iraq. Why pull special forces from hunting down Osama and his gang and put them in Iraq to scout the oil fields? Can you see that there are legitimate reasons to question the actions of Bushco and it's not all about "bash, bash, bash?"
Can you see that given the actions of past administrations (and the current one), including Clinton, it's hard to believe this fairytale they are selling us about "We made the hard decisions to free the Iraqi people." It seems highly unlikely they ever really gave a damn about the Iraqi people.
Can you see why trying to sell this story, after the fact, around the world to officials from other countries they'd be more than a little skeptical about our motives? Can you see why it's no surprise our coalition has been small and unstable?
I understand your disagreement with David and that's your opinion and that's all well and good. When I read your response though I thought you missed your calling...you should be writing ads for the Bush campaign. You'd probably do a better job than Rove and maybe you actually would be being honest because you believe what you're saying.
That blue jean thing was a hoot! Far better than any ad Bush has put out yet.
Respectfully,
Reg
