Petey T -
Rob Hirst indeed rocks like a summer full of hurricanes, my friend. an animal. saw the Oils at the Fillmore in the early 90's, and they just came out with amps and a drum kit, nothing else - and blew the fucking dome clear off. 4 or 5 times druing the show, my buddy and i just turned to each other and went, WOW, cause the collective tsunami was organically so intense and real, pure fucking rock. the Oils, may they R.I.P., cause Garrett is irreplaceable.
Max Weinberg, i've seen him and the Boss rock the entire LA Coliseum, on the second Amnesty tour, and i was impressed, but mostly with Bruce's mega-charisma. while he does shred it up pretty well on the drums, Max's CPA-esque appearance just doesn't say Rock'n'Roll to me. sorry to sound shallow - he's a fine drummer - i just like my rock stars to look the part at least a little bit.
we get paid less than the songwriters, but that's technical royalty/label stuff. live performance-wise, we're all - or at least always should be - equally compensated. yeah, it's a lot of sweaty work, back there in the engine room, but we love it and wouldn't trade it for anything. well, maybe some lead singing...maybe some groupies...okay, more attention, money and chicks in general, but other than that, no way.
i jest thee. drums may be under-respected by some or many, but that really doesn't bother me. we know that there's not much dancing without us, and a room full of different people dancing to the same beat can and will save the world. wild horses couldn't drag me off that drum throne.
rhythmically,
