These aren't all solo acts but they're all great songwriters, great performers and underappreciated, which is certainly a theme here.

John Wesley Harding
Thoughtful, sarcastic writing, great rock music. His latest album is a tribute to one of his influences and doesnt have any of his own songs so you need to find some of his older albums in a used record shop to hear some of those. I like Why We Fight and The Name Above the Title the best but all his stuff is well worth a listen.

dBs
A great defunct band. Terrific songs, mostly classed as power pop. Anybody who likes REM at all should love these guys but theyre only available as used records. Like This and The Sound of Music are probably the two best, although Chris Stamey isnt on either of them. The two leaders and writers (Stamey and Peter Holsapple) did one album together after the dBs broke up, Mavericks, which also has outstanding songs.

Billy Bragg and Wilco
Mermaid Avenue
Never-performed Woody Guthrie lyrics set to Wilco/Bragg music. Unique record. Very, very good.
