Here's a couple of my favorites -
Ani Difranco. She has about 11 or so CDs...all of them self produced on her own label. Her ealier stuff was pretty much folk. She's since melded a folk sound with funk. If that sounds cool to you - check her out. She also puts on a great live show - she has a live CD also called Living in Clip.
Liz Phair. Her latest - whitechocolatespaceegg is a really really good CD. I was never really a fan before this one, but have since tracked down her earlier releases.
Sarah Mclachlan. I admit it. Her voice can put me into a trance. Her older stuff is a bit weak, but her latest - Surfacing - is an overall good CD. She puts on a really good live show, so I recommend her live CD - Mirrorball.
And I know this one might make a few people think differently of me - but I like Alanis Morissette a lot. I'm probably not the demographic that she was trying to reach, but Jagged Little Pill was my soundtrack for the summer of 95. Wow that was a while ago. I do like her newest one too.
I better stop there.
