Born in '53 I'm suprised I'm not the oldest Baerwald Groupie in here.
I was raised on the principle, "If you want to find the truth in life, don't pass music by".
I suppose I've always been the competitive type. Got interested in sports early. Played football in high school until my career was haultded by a broken leg in spring practice. From there I got sidetracked. "That silver Tounged Devil stepped from the shadow"... & I walked in his shadow for about 3 years. My friends went to college, I bought a "Harley". Met a girl working in a bar. She was looking for a way out of a sheltered life... I was looking for an ornament to go on the back of my bike. Seemed like a fair trade. Then I had a family at 19.
The best thing I got from that relationship was a beautiful boy. I parked the Harley & have been working ever since. My wife being very young wasn't quite ready for that lifestyle and looked elsewhere. We fought for my son which ended up in a jount custody.
When I finally got my act back together I got interested in Bodybuilding. The challenge was there. Did that for about 10 years, competed 7 times, met my current wife. We married & had a beautiful daughter.
Raising my son was one of my best experiences. When he got old enough I started this "Yearly Challenge" ( the competitive spirit still in tact). I picked something with a challenge to it & we'd attempt it. We did biking trecks in the mountains twice, did backpacking twice & our last challenge was Woodstock '94 before he moved away.
I remember one year we did a bike ride through the mountains for 100 miles. He was about 13. We had our bikes loaded with all our camping gear, we were amateurs but looked like pros. My wife was to meet us at a designated point the second day to pick us up. 7 miles out we were draging & stopped for a snack. My wife pulled up in the pickup with my new born daughter impatiently saying,"come on lets go". While my son started to load up his bike, I said "No Way! I've come this far I'm going to finish". I'll never forget the look my son gave me, It was classic, but he got on his bike & we finished.
My son & I have always been close & I love him very much. After he moved I was left to persue a yearly challenge on my own. I picked up A "Ultimate Fighting Challenge" video & thought "I can do this". So I joined a local "Ju Jitsu" school & did that for about a year. Some of the toughest stuff I've been through yet.
My son is moving back in state so I hope we can resume the yearly thing. I'll keep you posted on what crazy thing we come up with.
I've always kept music close to me. At 14 I was listening to "Like A Rolling Stone' while everyone else was huming "Jeramiah Was A Bullfrog".
Bob Dylan was an Icon for me & I lived by his words. (My son's named Dylan & my daughter's is Sarah).
My musical taste has no limits, I just like good music. I also follow Kate Bush, John Prine, leonard Cohen, Natalie Merchant, EmmyLou Harris, David Baerwald just to name a few.
One of my hobbies is collecting music on video. I've got around 1,000 concerts, music videos, interviews etc. A lot of classic & rare stuff. Again it's a wide range of music, but it's missing any Baerwald material unfortunately. If anyones interested let me know.
Well I could go on but I'll leave that for the next chapter.
Good to know all of you, Keith
