Came from a Trump supporter I went to high school with. My friend John had a party at his house to get a bunch of us together that hung out in high school. John warned me in advance that one of our old friends was a heavy-duty Trump supporter and did like to rub people's noses in it. John said he just ignores when the guy does it, he felt embarrassed by it when they were out somewhere but at his house it would just be people we knew and so it would be OK. He asked me to just ignore the guy and not start a fight.
I said it depended upon what he said and if he specifically directed anything at me. He rolled his eyes and said to please not let it get out of control. Then he reminded me that this was why it was a bad idea to discuss politics in social situations and he wished people still followed that etiquette.
Well, sure enough, at one point that night, one of our female friends said something about Trump and Republicans and this guy launched into a speech about Democrats and Trump being the best thing that ever happened to this country. I was crouched down playing with John's dogs and stood up when I heard this. John immediately gave me the "Don't!" look when he saw me looking at the guy. I smiled and shrugged and put his hands over his face waiting for it to happen.
I began by asking him about Trump's greatness with a series of questions and then started to pepper him with fact. When it hit the point where the guy was standing there dumbfounded, mouth hanging open, John stepped in and tried to make a joke. I laughed, looked back at the guy and began asking him a few more questions.
Then the guy did the most ridiculous and humorous thing, he closed his eyes, put his hands over his ears and began to sing to the tune of a nursery rhyme "Trump, Trump, Trump, Trumpity, Trump, Trump, Trump!"
All of us standing there looked at each other. The woman he had been lecturing started laughing. John was smiling nervously and he said to me "I think that's what surrender looks like, can we stop now?"
I said I was done. John grabbed one of the guy's wrists and pulled his hand off of his ear and said "Reg is done, he won't say anything else to show what an idiot you are." and the guy smiled sheepishly. John and this guy constantly antagonize each other so the comment was what happens all the time between them. It's always a hurricane of insults flying back and forth to the extent you wonder if they are actually friends.
That was the closest I've come to seeing someone's eyes cross during one of these discussions. It was weird, but I guess he had nowhere else to go. His eyes were closed, so they may have been crossed, I don't know.
